Computational Science & Engineering Laboratory Intern Son Minyoung

How did you come to Korea Energy Research Institute?

I wanted to learn about the chemical/energy process. In the meantime, I saw an announcement in the school's Long-term Field Practice System (IPP) that the platform laboratory engineering part at the time of the Korea Energy Technology Institute was recruiting personnel and applied. After documents and interviews, he was selected for field training and conducted field training from July 1st to December 31st, 2021. After that, I was able to acquire relevant knowledge such as process simulation, economic analysis, and production of Excel VBA tools. Even after the field training, we applied to the researcher's own intern to deepen our knowledge of chemical engineering, selected after document screening and PT interviews, and conducted our own internship from March 1st to July 11th, 2022. During the process, I was able to gain work knowledge and experience in the field of chemical engineering, such as attending conferences and developing smart design platforms.

What part of your career as a researcher was helpful in the employment process?

First, the use of process simulation software. I worked on simulating and optimizing the process by dealing with a program called Aspen Plus that the university had never covered. As a chemical engineer, I was able to acquire knowledge of process handling.

Secondly, economic analysis. We analyzed and derived the economic feasibility of the research based on the process simulation. It helped me acquire the terms of the industry I got and understand my work. Finally, organizational life. The experience of adapting to organizational culture and communicating with members through company life helped me to have confidence that I could adapt to the company.

Do you have any memorable episodes while working at the institute?

First, I remember the experience of passionately teaching process simulation software by your doctor. I didn't know how to use the software at all, but I was able to build up my knowledge gradually because you told me in detail systematically. Whenever I ask a question when I don't know something, I was able to learn a lot by setting the direction so that I could apply it and use it.

Secondly, I remember the experience of attending a facility engineering conference. It was a conference held in Pyeongchang at the end of June. I also had a Smart Design Platform Assignment section where I participated as an intern researcher. I didn't do the presentation, but I felt proud and thrilled when the research project I did with you was presented. When reviewing the process design data, the doctor helped me a lot because I lacked chemical engineering knowledge and ability to use Excel, and based on this, I was able to play my role.

What kind of work are you doing now?

Our company is an EPC company that builds chemical plants and industrial environment plants. We are building chemical plants, clean rooms, and water treatment facilities as a company that works throughout the entire process of the plant from design, procurement, and construction. Currently, we are expanding our expertise to FEED. I'm still training for new employees, so the work in the company is not specified, and I'm waiting to proceed with the actual work.

What are your goals or things you want to do in the future?

I want to develop the basic capabilities of the industry by acquiring basic knowledge while designing the process. My goal is to grow into a PM professional and lead various projects when I gain experience in these design projects.

What do you want to say to other students?

I hope all the students will study and study hard in the given place and get good results.
