Dr. Min Kyung-sun's research team at the Gwangju Bio/Energy R&D Center at the Korea Institute of Energy Research has succeeded in developing a new enzyme process that produces intermediate raw materials for biofuels and bioplastics from agricultural waste (rice straws and corncobs).
The technology developed by the research team can achieve high value-added material production and carbon dioxide reduction at the same time by using biomass, which has a low cost compared to food resources and is widely distributed around the world.
This research has a great significance in that it applied an enzyme that does not exist in nature to a bioprocess using actual agricultural waste after improving it through structure-based computational science.
