- Two cases were selected in the energy and environment field: Pure oxygen circulating fluidized bed power generation technology and lithium secondary battery anode material technology

■ Two research results of the Korea Institute of Energy Research (President Kwak Byong-sung) were selected among '100 Excellent National R&D Achievements'.

□ Ministry of Science and ICT and Korea Institute of Science & Technology Evaluation and Planning have selected and announced '100 Excellent National R&D Achievements' every year since 2006 in order to enhance the public's understanding and interest in the role of science and technology and to inspire pride of the people in the field of science and technology.

■ The selected technologies in the field of energy and environment this year were ‘Chimneyless pure oxygen circulating fluidized bed power generation technology’ and ‘Lithium secondary battery negative new material technology for improving mileage of electric vehicles.’

□ The ‘Chimneyless pure oxygen circulating fluidized bed power generation technology’ developed by Principal Researcher, Dr. Lee Jae-goo produces electricity through a steam turbine after burning various solid fuels. This technology can realize a chimneyless power plant in connection with the carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) process by enriching and emitting only hyperpure carbon dioxide.

□ In addition, the ‘Lithium secondary battery negative electrode new material technology for improving electric vehicle mileage’ developed by Principal Researcher, Dr. Jang Bo-yun can overcome the capacity limit of lithium secondary battery negative material through producing silicon oxide (SiO2) nano powder which has three times more capacity than existing materials.

■ President Kwak Byong-sung of the Korea Institute of Energy Research said, “This selection of excellent achievement is an example of our researchers’ superior technological competitiveness. We will contribute to the creation of national growth engines through continuous research and development.”

○ The researchers will specialize in modularization and system construction to improve the efficiency of palladium separator-based hydrogen extraction processes. Through this, they plan to develop medium and small scale hydrogen plants based on fossil fuels and biomass including natural gas, and standardize customized hydrogen purifier applicable to electrolysis to respond to diverse domestic and overseas industries.
