A research team led by Dr. Jeong Nam-jo of the Marine Energy Convergence and Integration Research Team of Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER) developed a hybrid process (Reverse Electrodialysis - Reverse Osmosis - Reverse Electrodialysis) in which RED generators are attached to the front and back of the RO modules to minimize energy use.

A test was successfully completed, proving to be able to produce 100 ton of desalinated water per day, and the energy use has been cut by at least 30% compared to the RO process.
