The Korea Institute of Energy Research (Yi, Chang-keun, President of KIER) hosted CMCs Conference on Sept. 21, 2023 at Hotel ICC, Daejeon, Republic of Korea, with a purpose to promote related industries.

A Ceramic Matrix Composite (CMC) is a ceramic matrix coupled with embedded ceramic fibers, making it more resistant to extreme conditions such as high temperature of 1400°C or more, and strong impacts. CMC upholds its material properties in high temperature of 500°C or more and it is also lighter to one third of previous superalloy metal materials. That is why it is accepted as a game changer in aerospace industry.

At the present, CMCs are in strong demands of aerospace, power generation, and military. However, domestic R&D level is on an early stage. Consequently, continuous cooperation among industry, academy and R&D institute and investment to level up in this field is a strong necessity.

Around 100 of experts in CMCs and business people from Hanwha Aerospace, Dusan Enerbility, and Hyundai Rotem, DACC carbon and so on, attended in this conference, shared their R&D status, discussed a road map for related industries and networked each other for future cooperation.

Dr. Kim, Se-young who organized the conference in KIER emphasized that today’s conference provided a meeting opportuniy for people scattered around the areas of supply and demand and that in the coming years, R&D institutes with CMCs technology and businesses in need for the technology and funding institutes have to work together to build a new CMCs industry ecosystem.
