A research team led by Dr. Lee Min-jung at Advanced Combustion Power Laboratory of Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER) has embarked on a research to develop combustion technology using 100% anhydrous ammonia* for the first time in Korea.
* Anhydrous ammonia : Pure ammonia in a liquid or gaseous state consisting of nitrogen and hydrogen

It is the first attempt in Korea to develop a combustion technology using pure ammonia without mixing with other fuels and available to be applied for the transition to carbon-free fuels in the energy sector which accounts for 87% of the nation's GHG emissions. Specifically, it is expected to contribute to carbon emissions reduction in areas including gas turbines, coal-fired power generation, steel heating process, petrochemical and oil refining process.
