Korea Institute of Energy Research (President, Kim Jong-nam) embarked on the R&D and demonstration project on clean energy housing models based on hydrogen production, storage, sharing platform for cities and eco-friendly buildings.
This project aims to creating a platform that stores, shares, uses hydrogen from surplus energy generated by using renewable energy sources in an eco-friendly housing unit for storage. In particular, KIER intends to emphasize the usability of renewable sources with hydrogen energy, establish and demonstrate a power and heat supply system via fuel cells with improved efficiency and durability to maximize the efficiency in the use of renewable/hydrogen energy. It is noteworthy that KIER plans to use metal hydrides of which stability is verified by being applied to Submarine Jangbogo in order to ensure stable hydrogen storage, and adopt non-mechanical compression technologies to eliminate noise and vibration, which is likely to satisfy both acceptability and stability when applied to the housing unit.

The research team expects that this project can contribute to reducing GHG emissions in housing units, stabilizing power system, and improving housing environments by integrating active/passive construction techniques using renewable energy with hydrogen along with the ongoing hydrogen pilot city projects, further leading and expanding the construction market in the future.
