Dr. Kim Hee-yeon and his Energy Materials Laboratory at the Korea Institute of Energy Research has developed a technology that produces excellent carbon with the surface area along with outstanding electrical conductivity by using bacterial cellulose, a type of biomass, as raw material, and heat treatment at a relatively low temperature above 600℃. Nano sandwich-type catalysts developed by the researchers are helpful for the manufacture of ultra-thin electrodes due to the ultra-thin structure of bacterial cellulose hydrocarbon. They can be applied effectively to various electrochemical reactions, such as electrochemical hydrogen production. Besides, porous nano carbons, which are made from bacterial cellulose, are expected to effectively replace existing carbon materials because they are easier to synthesize at significantly lower temperatures than carbon black and active carbon processes.
