The Korea Institute of Energy Research (President Kim Jong-nam) Electric Power System Research Team has developed and demonstrated a ‘Distributed power-ESS convergence electric vehicle charging system operation technology’ that can add eco-friendliness of electric vehicles while maintaining energy independence and stable power by making the most of ESS and renewable energy.

The research team developed a ‘hybrid distributed electric vehicle charging system,’ which combines energy storage device and new renewable energy with a charging system, and added the eco-friendliness of electric vehicles by replenishing the charging power of electric vehicles using fossil fuels with renewable energy. At the same time, the research team has succeeded in securing stability of the power system and developing operation technologies that can minimize the burden and increase the energy independence rate.

This is an infrastructure technology that takes an important part of the charging demand of electric vehicles which is rapidly expanding in recent years. Thus, it is expected to play a very important role in stable power system operation in response to the increase of electric vehicle charging load. It can be also applied to various distributed power based smart energy communities.
