The researchers of the Wind Energy Research Team at the Korea Institute of Energy Research (President Kim Jong-nam) successfully performed the output and mechanical load test of a 5.5MW class marine wind turbine (Hyosung Heavy Industries) for the first time in Korea using domestic test technology, and received a conformity certificate.

The certification for wind turbines can be largely divided into type certification, parts certification, and project certification. Among them, type certification evaluates whether the type of wind turbine is properly designed and manufactured according to international requirements or internationally required technical level. Among the type certifications, the Korea Institute of Energy Research is in charge of output performance and mechanical load type tests.

Based on the test analysis software developed in-house, the Korea Institute of Energy Research created a type test report for the 5.5MW wind power generator which is the largest capacity in Korea, and obtained the type test conformity certificate.

The cost of type test conducted based on the software developed by this research team is only half of the cost suggested by overseas organizations, and the time required to perform the output performance and mechanical load test, which are essential items for the type test, is significantly reduced. In addition, it is anticipated that KIER’s abilities of smooth communication and fast work close with customers will be its strengths compared to other overseas institutes.
