"KIER intends to take the lead in overcoming climate crisis by developing energy technologies"

Kim Jong-nam, the President of Korea Institute of Energy Research explained the institute's strategic directions in R&D dedicated to improving the quality of life in a sentence. To tackle the climate crisis with energy technologies, he stressed the need to develop hydrogen energy and increase the power generation efficiency by using PVs, and wind. In the meantime, he also pointed out that KIER should continue to carry out R&D activities to reduce fine dust and GHG emitted from the existing thermal power stations.

Completely transforming Samcheok into a hydrogen city

During the interview, the President commented on KIER's ongoing hydrogen pilot city project in Samcheok, Gangwon-do. Commenced in this April, the hydrogen pilot city project claims to build an energy self-reliant city. It is scheduled to be completed in 2023 with the injection of KRW 16.6 billion.
According the plan, electricity generation facilities using solar/wind power will be installed to produce hydrogen by dissolving water with the power generated and the hydrogen can be used to run fuel cell electric buses. Likewise, KIER intends to create an entire value chain, which means to build a platform that stores, shares, and uses energy generated from eco-friendly housing units with renewable energy by using hydrogen.
To make this happen, KIER has implemented various R&D projects. A representative example is a 'plus energy building' or 'energy surplus building' project, moving beyond the existing zero-energy building projects. In the plus energy building, people can both consume and generate energy in the future.

The President takes one step further from the current government policies and considers a new approach on PV development. The existing PV installations can be problematic due to the rejection by residents in farming and fishing areas. He said, "We are now working on developing PV installations tailored to cities so that they can be attached to buildings."

Predict the future of energy and consider the environment

KIER developed and released a map indicating the best location to install wind/solar power generation facilities in May. This map allows the users to identify the amount of power generated by using the existing renewable energy sources. The institute also engages in R&D activities regarding gasification of plastic waste to produce hydrogen and fuels. The President said, "I believe that KIER can overcome the issue of plastic waste within years."
