Trial project of building environmentally-friendly energytown in Jincheon backed by Ministry of Science and ICT (Minister, Youngmin Yu) and conducted by KIER (President Byong-sung Gwak) has been successfully operated for 1 year of demonstrative operation, expecting bright future of environmentally-friendly energy.

Since completion ceremony held in November 2016 with the goal of Energy Zero in unit area using new and renewable energy and unutilized energy, Jincheon Environmentally-Friendly Energytown has been supplying heat source for heating, hot water supply and cooling to 6 public spaces including high schools and libraries while the demonstration.

KIER analyzed that 63% of heat source for heating and hot water supply has been supplied from solar power system related with seasonal thermal storage system for 1 year, and 80% of heat energy(about 480 MWh) has been supplied if including energy produced by utilizing remaining heat as low-temperature energy source

The rest of heat energy in short has been supplied through heat pump that uses geothermy and sewage heat, and heat source for cooling has been supplied to 5 public spaces except a high school, by producing cool water during cooling period in Summer. Also, the project has highly contributed to standardizing electric load, by storing heat produced by heat pump in heat storage tank during midnight when electricity rate is low and supplying it during day.

Meanwhile, it is measured that solar photovoltaic power generation system has produced power which is 1.37 times(970MWh) the power consumption of 6 public buildings in the demonstration group. And by producing and utilizing new and renewable energy, it is analyzed that economic benefit of 250 million won is created a year and 720 tons of greenhouse gas which equals to annual emission volume of 360 midsize cars was reduced.

Currently, KIER is modifying and supplementing an integrated system while operating the demonstration research in order for Jincheon Environmentally-friendly Energytown to make better use of the environmentally-friendly energy, and is developing a business model of the similar system for its domestic distribution.

By reflecting requirement of users of public buildings, KIER is modifying and supplementing the integrated system for optimized use of each energy facility and control logic and conducting performance analysis thorough monitoring.

Byong-sung Gwak, President of KIER which conducts the project told that “Jincheon Environmentally-Friendly Energytown project will contribute to growth of new energy industry that responds to global climate change by tackling challenges of energy and environment at the same time”.

In the meantime, as Jincheon Environmentally-Friendly Energytown which has energy supply system based on new and renewable energy and unutilized energy is used as a testbed of Smart Zero Energy City(Smart ZEC) carried out by the government, the Energytown is expected to demonstrate effective use of convergence of various energy source and energy trade in the future.

By demonstrating trade and use between energy prosumers, who are supplier and consumer at the same time, through energy network to be built in unit area or city, the project will suggest effective ways to use distributed energy sources.
